Science Festival at PMMH

The PMMH will be present at ESPCI (10 rue Vauquelin, 75005 Paris) on Saturday afternoon, October 4th, for open-access experimental demonstrations.
The laboratory will also welcome school groups on October 7th and 8th.

The laboratory tour will be divided into workshops providing a quick overview of the PMMH’s research activities: wave propagation, kirigami, walking drops, tear propagation, soap bubbles, a mechanics workshop, dragonfly flight, superhydrophobic surfaces, and inflatable structures. The workshops or experimental demonstrations have been designed and will be presented by the researchers (non-permanent and/or permanent) or technicians who study them daily.

Each school group will be divided into small groups of 6-7 students to allow for their exploration of the laboratory. Please consider the appropriate number of chaperones.

Grades: elementary to high school.
Registration required by following this link: https://fetedelascience-scolaires.sorbonne-universite.fr/home/actions/VoirFicheAction/3006

Cheese-rosettes-friction

Uneven maturation and friction make Swiss cheese shavings resemble jagged flowers. “Tête de moine” (Monk’s Head) is traditionally eaten or served by scraping the top of the cheese wheel with a (...)

Nature article: Underground, Fungi Organize Large-Scale Carbon Transport

For nearly 450 million years, mycorrhizal fungi have constructed networks to collect and trade nutrient resources with plant roots. Owing to their dependence on host-derived carbon, these fungi (...)

Propulsive performance of a windsurf-inspired pitching foil

The competitive practice of sailing and windsurfing has seen a recent revolution with the introduction of new appendixes of hydrofoils that generate lift and keep the board or the boat out of the water for a sufficiently high sailing speed (∼3... (...)

Asymmetric bending boundary layer: The λ-test

In this paper, the MecaWet group investigates the mechanics of two asymmetric ribbons bound at one end and pulled apart at the other ends. They characterize the elastic junction near the bonding and conceptualize it as a bending boundary layer.... (...)
