Geometry-induced rigidity, failure and functionality in thin elastic structures

I will present recent results from our Laboratory on the mechanical behavior of complex-shaped shells, subjected to different forms of loading. The common underlying feature in these problems is the prominence of geometry in dictating the mechanical response in slender elastic objects. Our approach in primarily experimental, where digital rapid prototyping techniques are used to control both the geometric and material properties of our structures, towards constructing precision model apparatuses.

First, we shall focus on the linear response of non-spherical pressurized shells, under indentation, to explore the concept of geometry-induced rigidity. In the nonlinear regime under large displacements, we then investigate modes of localization consisting of point-like (s-cones) and linear-like (gullies) regions. Finally, we shall introduce the framework for buckling-induced folding, or Buckligami, involving functional structural transformations through mechanical instabilities of micro-structured shells. We are thereby able to achieve novel functional modes of deformation including encapsulation, flexure and twist which are scalable, reversible, and robust.
